Stoudemire Award for Outstanding Case Conference Innovation

Work on webinars starts 4-5 months in advance—the latest attracted a record attendance

The winner of this year’s ACLP Alan Stoudemire Award—for innovation and excellence in C-L Psychiatry education—is David Fipps, DO, assistant professor of psychiatry at Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine; senior associate consultant, psychiatry, and attending physician for transplant psychiatry, bariatric surgery psychiatry, C-L psychiatry, and addictions psychiatry at Mayo Clinic Department of Psychiatry and Psychology.

The award is given to an individual or group who has/have developed and/or led a creative educational program in C-L Psychiatry directed at any experience level—from medical students to board-certified physicians—that is outstanding by virtue of its excellence, innovation, and impact.

Dr. Fipps is known to Academy members who have attended ACLP case conference webinars, which he co-ordinates and moderates, involving trainee presenters alongside experienced discussants. He is one of the Academy’s Webb Fellows having received his trainee award in 2019 and currently serves as vice-chair (chair from November) of the Academy’s Residency Education Subcommittee, the Mentorship Subcommittee as chair of its recruitment/mentorship workgroup, and is a member of the Transplant Psychiatry SIG.

Dr. Fipps envisioned and created the Case Conference series in 2021. Since then, 15 successful webinars have taken place covering a wide variety of topics, with a diverse group of panelists, showcasing ACLP SIGs and subcommittees to an international audience. Coordination of these events typically starts 4-5 months in advance and includes ACLP advertisement collaboration, feedback on trainee slides, incorporation of DEI into each discussant’s lecture, a detailed practice session, and the live session on the day of event.

The webinars enable trainees to be mentored and present a classic C-L Psychiatry case while showcasing the expertise of a discussant from an ACLP SIG/subcommittee in an interactive presentation.

There have been more than 2,800 registrants for case conferences since inception, spread over the country and beyond:

The number of registrants has gradually grown, from 59 at the outset to a record 271 for the latest webinar in September. Case conferences are held every other month (except November because of the annual meeting) on the second Wednesday of the month at 12.30 PM EST. Topics are advertised in advance in ACLP News and on Twitter and Facebook.

Make a date now for the next case conference:

12:30 – 1:00 PM EST, Wednesday, January  8

If you, or anyone you know, is interested in presenting an upcoming case conference or helping behind the scenes, contact Dr. Fipps on fipps.david@mayo.edu.
