Meet the Past Presidents
What these bios show is that our last five presidents are a diverse group. What unifies all of them is a multidecade commitment to organized medicine. Each of them contributed many years of service both to our organization and to other medical specialty groups. We serve our patients in the clinic, but we also serve them by our advocacy for our profession and for the medically ill.

Maria L.A. Tiamson-Kassab, MD, FACLP
Director, Psychiatry and Psychological Services, Moores Cancer Center, & Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, University of California San Diego (retired)
Maria L.A. Tiamson-Kassab has served on multiple ACLP committees, including as Chair of the Membership Committee, and served on the Council/Board of Directors from 2011 to 2022. She held multiple offices for the Society for Liaison Psychiatry in NY, including President. She served on nine APA committees and workgroups, held leadership positions in APA district branches Nassau County District Branch, Psychiatric Society of Westchester, and San Diego Psychiatric Society, and served as APA Area Assembly representative from NY and CA. During her term as President of ACLP (2020-2021), Covid-19 was at its peak, and she led our organization’s response to the crisis. She fostered collaborative relationships with multiple psychiatry organizations and instituted governance reforms in ACLP. As the first and only Filipino-American leader of our organization, she is particularly proud of the creation of the DEI Task Force, subsequently reconvened as a continuing committee.

Philip Bialer, MD, FACLP

Within the APA, he served as the LGBT Representative to the APA Assembly Minorities and Underrepresented Committee and subsequently as the Chair of the C-L Psychiatry Council. For the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, he served on the C-L Psychiatry Committee. He served on the ACLP Board of Directors for 12 years and was President of ACLP in 2021-2022. He views his most significant achievement as development of a 5-year Strategic Plan and hopes to see ACLP growing as the home of C-L Psychiatry with expanding educational outreach and expanding collaboration with the House of Medicine.
