Advancing Integrated Psychiatric Care
for the Medically Ill

ACLP SIGs, Caucuses, and Forums

Many ACLP members are especially interested in one or more subspecialty areas of consultation-liaison psychiatry. We are pleased to sponsor a range of networking groups which bring together professionals to discuss clinical care, teaching, and research in subspecialty areas, or to share experiences. For many years, ACLP networking groups have provided vital connections, mentoring, and collaborative support to hundreds of our members. Our networking groups meet at the annual meeting and also throughout the year via listserv, video conferencing, and email.

The ACLP sponsors three types of networking groups. Special Interest Groups (SIGs) focus on the clinical population or work setting of the member (e.g., geriatrics, research). Caucuses bring members together based on personal identity (e.g., ethnicity, gender). All are welcome to participate in caucuses. Forums are for people in specific work positions (e.g., fellowship directors, division directors). Membership in forums is restricted to people in the work role of the forum.

Current networking groups and their leaders appear below (contact information for the chairs is available in the online member directory). Nearly all have dedicated webpages where you can learn detailed information on purpose and activities. All listservs are restricted to subscribers; only subscribers may post messages and visit listserv archives. Please read our listserv FAQ!

SIG Goals:

The International Medical Graduate (IMG) Caucus/SIG was established in 2023 to enhance the recruitment and professional development of IMGs within Consultation–Liaison Psychiatry (CLP) and CL fellowships. Despite representing approximately one-third of psychiatry residency applicants and residents, IMGs remain significantly underrepresented among CL psychiatrists, comprising only about 13% of CL fellowship applicants. This disparity highlights both a recruitment challenge and an opportunity for growth within ACLP.

CLP is often perceived by IMGs as particularly demanding due to its high expectations for academic productivity, scholarship, and systems-based expertise. However, IMGs bring substantial strengths to CLP, including firsthand experience with diverse health care systems and deep cross-cultural perspectives. These attributes are directly relevant to the core work of consultation–liaison psychiatry and can enrich the field's clinical, educational, and scholarly mission.

The IMG Caucus aims to create a dedicated forum within ACLP to support IMG trainees and faculty, foster mentorship, and demystify pathways into CL fellowships and academic CLP careers. By providing targeted guidance and a professional community, the caucus seeks to empower IMGs to translate their unique clinical experiences and cultural expertise into educational initiatives, scholarly work, and leadership roles that benefit the broader ACLP membership.

Through advocacy, mentorship, and collaboration, the IMG Caucus aspires to strengthen diversity within CLP, expand the academic contributions of IMGs, and enhance the field’s capacity to address cross-cultural and systems-level challenges in contemporary medical settings.

Mentorship

Are you an IMG looking for career mentorship as a CL psychiatrist? ACLP mentorship programs are free and they can help at all stages of your career. Make sure you check the option “IMG related” on your corresponding application form:

OR contact the SIG chair or vice-chair directly.

Bio of Shruti Mutalik:

Shruti Mutalik is a Consultation Liaison and Transplant psychiatrist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She immigrated from Mumbai, India, to New York City, in pursuit of a residency in Psychiatry.

She believes that her experience of having lived in two countries helps her inhabit an identity that is enriched and informed by both perspectives and experiences. Particularly in the current sociopolitical climate, she is committed to  the IMG SIG as both,  a supportive community for IMGs at a particularly challenging time, and an opportunity to harness the incredible diversity of perspectives and lived experiences that  IMGs bring,  with the rest of the ACLP.

CAUCUSES

The mission of the ACLP Women’s Caucus is to encourage career development for CL psychiatrists among Academy members who identify as women. The Caucus seeks to provide support and networking. The Caucus meets during the Annual Meeting. All are welcome to participate.

FORUMS

Two additional listservs exist to network C-L Psychiatry fellowship program directors and C-L Psychiatry division directors, supporting discussions around shared challenges specific to these roles. Both groups meet at the Academy’s annual meeting and host occasional Zoom meetings. The C-L Psychiatry fellowship program directors' listserv is exclusive to individuals currently in this role; the division directors listserv permits non-division directors sponsored by a current division director already subscribed to the group. Please contact the Executive Office for further information.

A third forum, for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) was created in November 2025. The purpose of this Forum is to develop a welcoming space for APPs, both Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants, within the ALCP, and to foster an environment of collaboration and connectivity. If you are intersted in joining this Forum, please contact the Executive Office.
