Only 26% of general session submissions were accepted last time
Abstract submissions for this year’s Annual Meeting are 18% higher than last year.
Submissions closed last month for the November 6-9 meeting in Miami with the theme Promoting Whole Health Through Innovative and Integrative Approaches to C-L Psychiatry.
Scientific program chair Amy Bauer, MD, FACLP, says: “This significantly higher number of abstracts from a wide spectrum of the Academy’s membership shows that our theme has captured imaginations and ensures the meeting will be a blockbuster.”
All submissions will now be examined closely by a team of more than 160 members who have volunteered to be abstract reviewers. A far smaller group of reviewers has been experimented with over the past two meetings, but—given this response from members—volunteer reviews have now become a firm fixture in the annual meeting calendar.
Moreover, this year, reviewers will be entitled to claim CME credit (AMA PRA Category 2 Credit) on completion of their task. “That’s in addition to being able to mention on your CV that you served as an abstract reviewer, and getting name-checked in the meeting final program if all assigned reviews are completed,” says Dr. Bauer. ”We are so grateful to everyone who has signed on to review.”
After initial scoring of abstracts by volunteers, members of the Academy’s Annual Meeting Committee will curate a balanced program content befitting the theme. But not all submissions will be selected—far from it!
Statistics show that 785 abstracts were submitted this year—and that the 18% increase was on top of a 31% increase last year. But in 2023, only 26% of general session submissions were accepted; 54% of poster submissions; and 44% of oral papers.
“Although the meeting will feature more sessions of every type this year, it’s still highly competitive,” points out Dr. Bauer.
