New “clinical pearls” from Academy members have been added to the Member Resources section of the website.
At the Academy’s 2016 and 2017 Annual Meetings, several speakers were recorded giving brief presentations about key topics in our subspecialty.
For example, Lydia Chwastiak, MD, MPH, FAPM, University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, advocates the use of measurement-based care to improve outcomes in depression treatment.
Research, she says, has shown that therapists consistently over-estimate how well their patients are doing in treatment. So, measurement-based care can be challenging for therapists.
In her own establishment, lack of progress is discussed as a routine part of treatment—providing an opportunity to engage patients in collaborating to identify what is affecting their functioning.
“It may seem daunting to incorporate measurement-based care,” Dr. Chwastiak admits—which is why she provides basics on what’s needed to make a start and recommends small steps at a time.
