The Academy’s new President, Madeleine Becker, MA, MD, FACLP, ABIOM, is a Professor in the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences, and the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Becker is nationally recognized for her expertise in medical education, integrative medicine, women’s mental health, and in the interface of psychiatric and medical illness.

Dr. Becker currently serves as the Director of Graduate Medical Education and is the Co-Director of the Integrative Medicine Fellowship. She is also the Founder and Director of the Integrative Medicine Consult Service at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health at Thomas Jefferson University.

Dr. Becker earned a master’s degree in Psychology from New York University and a master’s degree in Clinical Health Psychology from Yeshiva University. She obtained her MD from Jefferson Medical College and did her residency in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. She has worked at Jefferson for 17 years, where she developed and served as the Program Director for the fellowship in C-L Psychiatry and has served as the Director of the Hospital Psychiatric Consultation Services.

Dr. Becker’s clinical and scholarly work focuses on medical education, integrative psychiatric care of the medically ill, women’s mental health, perinatal health including substance use, mood disorders during pregnancy, infertility and the use of both complementary and psychotropic medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as women’s reproductive and human rights.

Dr. Becker is board certified in Psychiatry, C-L Psychiatry and Integrative Medicine.  She serves in leadership roles in multiple national organizations, including the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Psychiatric Association. She is a member of the American College of Psychiatrists, and she has been part of the working group to develop the Milestones for Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. Her past service for the ACLP includes chairing of the Fellowship Education Subcommittee and holding various leadership roles in governance. She is currently the Co-Director of the Women’s Caucus and also serves on the editorial board for the Journal of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.

Dr. Becker has served on the ACLP Board for eight years. She is well-versed in ACLP’s growth and has been working with Board leadership in developing strategic plans for the future of the Academy. Some of these initiatives include developing a larger members’ survey to assure we are meeting our members’ interests. “With our members’ input, we also look forward to increasing our caucuses to accommodate our diverse and growing membership,” says Dr. Becker. “We are also currently putting plans in motion to increase our educational offerings in innovative ways. I’m looking forward to an active and productive year.”
