The finding:
The article aims to provide a basic framework to health professions students for patients evoking feelings of anxiety and fear, anger and hatred, helplessness and hopelessness, and positive emotions in their healthcare providers. The article defines and normalizes countertransference reactions, potential consequences of these reactions, and provides a simplified method of managing these reactions.
Strength and weaknesses:
The article is overly reductionistic on the nature of countertransference reactions, the impact of these reactions, and the management strategies. Despite a title suggesting a focus on health professions students, the article itself does not place a focus on the method by which these reactions should be discussed with students, nor does it provide specific tips or guidance for students to manage these reactions. Nonetheless, the article provides a quick refresher for clinicians, and provides an easy method by which students can be oriented to the complexity of countertransference.
Relevance:
Countertransference reactions are an important and meaningful part of the work of C-L psychiatrists, and in the midst of immense medical complexity and by the nature of consultation, can at times be forgotten as an important element to educate health professions students about. This article provides a quick framework to lead more complex teaching about countertransference, and to remind the whole C-L team about the importance and potentially grave consequences of unchecked countertransference.
