How to Transform the Biopsychosocial Model
Early bird registration for EAPM conference open till May 15
Why the biopsychosocial model—biological, psychological, and social factors and their complex interactions in health, illness, and health care delivery—is not yet widely practised in Medicine, and what we should do about it, is the round-up theme from a keynote speaker at this year’s European Association of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine and Integrated Care (EAPM) annual scientific conference in Munich, Bavaria, on September 10-13.

Professor Sir Simon Wessely, FMedSci FRS, Regius Chair of Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, part of King’s College London, completes the keynote speaker line-up in a program for the conference theme Transforming the Biopsychosocial Model: conceptual and clinical aspects.
A video introduction from conference president Professor Dr. Peter Henningsen is here:
Implications of this model are common psychiatric hospitals where a multi-disciplinary team operates. Yet, a 2024 UK review showed a disconnect between training and practice, and that the established biomedical model alone did not match with social and psychological aspects of health problems. The review recommended applying the biopsychosocial model to clinical practice to:
- Recognize that relationships are central to providing health care.
- Use self-awareness as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool.
- Elicit the patient’s history in the context of life circumstances.
- Decide which aspects of biological, psychological, and social domains are most important to understanding and promoting the patient’s health.
- Provide multidimensional treatment.
Early bird registration for the conference remains open till May 15. The EAPM is a strategic partner of the ACLP.
