Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD)/Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS): Informing C-L Psychiatry Practice

Committee and SIG join forces to produce resource document

Medical Aid in Dying/Physician Assisted Suicide (MAiD/PAS) is set to be discussed at this year’s ACLP Annual Meeting with presentations from people representing both sides of this topic.

Additionally, the Research & Evidence-Based Practice Committee is spearheading an Academy resource document on MAiD/PAS, with evidence being put together by its Guidelines and Evidence-based Medicine Subcommittee, who have set up a work group, and the Bioethics SIG.

Announcing the initiative, chair of the Research & Evidence-Based Practice Committee, Amy Bauer, MD, FACLP, says: “Our Academy has unique expertise in the psychiatric care of patients facing terminal illness to contribute to ongoing discussions of ethics, policy, and practice in this rapidly evolving area.”

At the end of 2024, MAiD/PAS was legal in 11 US jurisdictions: California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Montana, Maine, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon (the first state to legislate in 1994), Vermont, and Washington DC. However, on February 7, 2025, the Montana Senate passed a bill that will largely end this practice if passed by the state House and signed into law.
