Fellowship MATCH Results Remain High

‘It is heartening to know that the future of our subspecialty will be sustained by the incoming generation of trainees’

This year’s C-L Psychiatry Fellowship MATCH statistics remained high following a record increase in 2024.

In all, 95 applicants matched into our subspecialty programs (compared with 98 last year), representing nearly 96% of applications.

The position fill rate, however, was slightly down from last year’s record of 77%, partly due to an increase in available positions from 125 to 133—71.4% of positions this year were filled.

“This year’s numbers reflect a sustained interest in our field,” says Kewchang Lee, MD, FACLP, chair of the Fellowship Education Subcommittee (FES). “It is also heartening to know that the future of our subspecialty will be sustained by the incoming generation of trainees.

“The statistics represent the continuation of a five-year trend in significantly increased applicants and matched fellows compared to pre-pandemic years, which I believe is largely due to the widespread adoption of virtual interviewing.”

This year was also the second year that C-L Psychiatry Fellowship programs were able to use the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for fellow applications. Most program directors have chosen to use this option, which has the advantage of increased efficiency for both candidates and programs compared to the use of the traditional ACLP Common Application, which must be emailed.  Since using ERAS requires candidates to pay a fee, however, programs may still accept the Common Application.

Looking to the future, Dr. Lee says: “As in prior years since the onset of the pandemic, the FES will re-examine its guidelines for Fellowship application and interviewing in conjunction with the guidelines set forth by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Association of Directors of Residency Training. We will also continue striving to ensure that these evolving processes promote equity in access to C-L Psychiatry Fellowship training.”
